Wee Wern: Going abroad for training will help my cause KUALA LUMPUR: Top national junior squash player Low Wee Wern has chalked up good results since the beginning of the year and she is looking at getting an overseas training stint in either Holland or Australia.
The Penangite turned professional last year and made her national senior team debut at the Asian championships in Kuwait in February.
She reached the individual quarter-finals and was the fourth-ranked players of the team who retained the title together with Nicol David, Sharon Wee and Delia Arnold.
In April, she won her first Wispa title at the the NSC Satellite No. 3 tournament.
Last month, Wee Wern emerged as the Sukma (Malaysia Games) champion – beating Delia in the final.
A week later, she won the Milo All-Star International Junior Under-19 title. And in Busan on Sunday, she retained her Under-19 Asian junior crown.
Wee Wern, who will turn 18 on July 25, said that retaining the Asian Junior title was an early birthday present for her.
“I am still eligible to compete in the Asian Juniors in India next year and I want to complete a hat-trick of titles,'' Wee Wern said.
Wee Wern added that she was satisfied with her performances in the first six months of the year.
“I won a number of junior titles and also my first Wispa title. It’s a good start to my career as a professional,'' said Wee Wern, who is ranked 57th in the world.
“I aim to break into the top 50 bracket in the world rankings in the next six months and an overseas stint will certainly help my cause.
“I hope to go either to Amsterdam or Australia for three months in September.”
World number one Nicol is based in Amsterdam and trains under former world champion Liz Irving. National number two Sharon is also based overseas – under the charge of Shaun Moxham in Antwerp, Belgium.
Wee Wern, who trains under Aaron Soyza in Penang, will feature in the NSC Super Satellite No. 2 next week (July 7-11) and NSC Satellite No. 4 (July 14-18).
She will also feature in the qualifying rounds of the Malaysian Open (July 21-26).
Wee Wern said that she hoped to compete in the women's world team championships in Egypt scheduled for Nov 30 - Dec 6.
