Wee Wern craving for more success
Top national junior squash player Low Wee Wern’s appetite has been whetted after winning her first Wispa title last week. The Penangite, who turned professional last year, upstaged two higher ranked players en route to winning the NSC Satellite No. 3 tournament in Bukit Jalil last week. Wee Wern, seeded fourth, stunned top seed Lisa Camilleri of Australia in the semi-finals before upsetting compatriot and second seed Siti Munirah Jusoh 9-1, 10-8, 9-3 in the final. And now the world No 63-ranked Wee Wern is hoping to win more satellite tournaments and break into top 50 bracket by the end of this year. The 18-year-old Wee Wern, who is training full-time this year after completing her O-Levels, is pleased with the start she has made as a professional player this year. “I made my debut in the Asian Championships (in Chennai in February) and I was happy to have reached the quarter-finals in the individual event and to have helped the team retain the title,” said Wee Wern, who trains in Penang under coach Aaron Soyza. “I am also delighted to have bagged my first professional title. This augurs well for my professional career. My aim is to win more satellite tournaments and further improve my rankings so that I can break into the top 50 before the end of this year.” Wee Wern’s next assignment will be the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Terengganu next month. “I won the Sukma title in Kedah two years ago in the Under-21 category but this time it will be tough as the organisers have raised the age limit to 23,” said Wee Wern, who will also be gunning for her fourth consecutive Under-19 title in the Milo All Stars Championships in June. “I will face a strong challenge from national players like Delia (Arnold) and Lim (Yoke Wai) in Sukma. “However, my biggest challenge this year will come when I defend my Asian Junior Championships title in South Korea in June.” Wee Wern is also hoping to win a place in the national team for the World Team Championships this year World No. 1 Nicol David is set to lead the Malaysian charge. Malaysia finished third in the world team meet in Canada in 2006 – their best result so far in the series.
