Top players for squash championships
THE country's top juniors will be in action in the Milo All Stars Junior squash championships at the PJ Astaka from May 24 to 29. Organising secretary Mary Ong said they had received overwhelming response for the championships which had five age groups each for boys and girls. “It will be an interesting and exciting tournament as countries like Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong & South Korea are sending their top juniors who are preparing for the World Juniors in July. Our local players will have a good chance to match their rivals from the countries. The championships will also serve as a good build up for the Sukma in Kuala Terengganu. Most of the local players will also be representing their states in the Sukma,'' said Ong after a sponsorship ceremony in Petaling Jaya. The championships is organised by the Squash Rackets Association of Selangor (SRAS) and the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) with support from Milo and Prince. Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) has also sanctioned the championships. MBPJ secretary Puasa Mohd Taib said they were pleased to be part of the championships that had grown into a major event in the world squash calendar. “We have been organising the championships since 2001. Some of the current world top players had featured in the championships. We were informed that about 540 players from 17 countries have confirmed their participation. The championships also provides a platform for our local players to gain experience,'' said Puasa. Milo sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong said they were proud to be associated with the All Stars junior championships. “Some of our national juniors had gained from the championships. The organisers are bringing the world top juniors to Malaysia to play against our juniors,'' said Ng.
