Squash queen deserves the honours
OUR very own sensational sports queen Nicol David has finally been recognised by the country. The Darjah Bakti (DB) conferred on her by Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the occasion of His Majesty’s birthday will definitely be a morale booster for her. The fact that the DB was established in 1975 and limited only to 10 recipients, and Nicol being the first to receive it, speaks volumes of this prestigious award. Honestly, I expected at least a Datukship for Nicol but upon reading further, I realised the DB is a much, much higher honour. I hope this rare honour bestowed upon Nicol will spur her on to bring more glory to the nation. My fervent hope is that Nicol will go on winning title after title and retire as the world No.1 when the time comes to call it quits. To the other athletes, especially the badminton players, please emulate Nicol David. What she gets in terms of facilities and monetary gain is peanuts compared with other sports, but for the love of squash and the country, this young lady has been delivering game after game.
