Squash juniors to play in inter-state meet
NATIONAL juniors Marcus Yuen and Muhd Zulazri Azhar will have to shoulder a big responsibility for Selangor in the Inter-state squash championships starting at the Kuala Lumpur Squash Centre in Jalan Duta today. In the absence of seniors - Ivan Yuen and Ng Joo Wen, who will be leaving for London for the British Junior Open, the two youngsters have been promoted as Selangor top two players in the men’s category of the championships. The other two members of the men's team are Len Wai Kit and Darren Subramaniam. Squash Rackets Association of Selangor (SRAS) secretary Mary Ong said the foursome of Yuen, Muhd Zulazri, Len and Darren would be able to gain exposure in the inter-team event. “Some of them are earmarked for next year’s Sukma. The experience gained in the inter-state championships will benefit them. We are aware of the odds against them. But we would like to see them give their best in all the matches,” said Ong. Selangor have named P.T. Pushppa Devi, a member of the Malaysian team that won the silver in the World Junior championships in Hong, Kong, Lim Sue Yen, K. Darshini and Mary Lee for the women's category. Eight teams - Selangor, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, Malacca, Terengganu and Armed Forces – have confirmed participation in the men's category. The teams will be divided into two groups. After the preliminary rounds, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. Only five teams - Selangor, Perak, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur and Terengganu - have registered for the women's category. The five teams will play in a round robin format and the top team will be declared the champion.
