Ministry's sports events postponed for polls THE Education Ministry will allow teachers to cast their votes as well as serve as officials at the general election. Following the announcement, all sports events scheduled from March 9 to 13 have been postponed.
Abdul Ghafar Mahmud, the deputy director general of the Department of Physical and Sports Education (JPJS), said six sports events had been scheduled during the first semester school holidays.
The sports are cricket (March 9-14 in Sabah); rhythmic gymnastics (March 9-12 in Perlis); artistic gymnastics (March 9-12 in Johor); archery (March 9-12 in Terengganu); aquatics (March 10-13 in Negri Sembilan) and Squash (March 9-13 in Negri Sembilan).
He said the new dates for the events were from Aug 17-22, but there would not be any changes on the venues.
“A large number of teachers are involved in the elections as returning officers in the polling stations. Many of them also have to return to the hometowns to cast their votes. As such we think it would be wise to postpone the events to August,'' said Abdul Ghafar.
