Malaysia’s Mohd Azlan Iskandar sent second-seeded Egyptian Ramy Ashour packing to take an unexpected place in the men’s quarter-finals of the British Open squash championships at the Liverpool Cricket Club on Friday.
It was clear that the 20-year-old world number four from Cairo – wearing full length white surgical stockings – was suffering in some way when Mohd Azlan took the first game win in just five minutes.
Ashour, a two-time junior world champion, levelled the match in the second game but Mohd Azlan eventually won 11-1, 5-11, 11-8, 11-8 in 41 minutes to book his place in the last eight.

t was the biggest upset of the tournament and also the best run for Mohd Azlan in the prestigious meet so far.
Mohd Azlan was scheduled to play sixth seed Thierry Lincou of France in the quarter-finals at press time.
“It was hard dealing with that situation – but I must admit that I found it a bit intimidating when he came onto court wearing tights,” said the delighted 11th seeded Mohd Azlan in the official tournament website www.britishopensquash.com
