Malaysians take U-19 titles in international squash tourney
MALAYSIANS Ivan Yuen and Low Wee Wern captured the Under-19 titles in the boys and girls categories in the Milo-All Star International Junior squash championships at the PJ Astaka recently. Yuen, the top seed, did not have any problem in outclassing New Zealand's Evan Williams 9-1, 9-3, 9-0 in the one-sided match, which lasted about 25 minutes. Squash champions: Low and Yuen with their medals. Low also did not face any resistance from Misaki Kobayashi in the final. Low, who will be representing Penang in the Sukma, notched a 9-3, 9-1, 9-0 won against Misaki. However, the match of the tournament was the boys' Under-15 final between Kuala Lumpur's Afeeq Abedeen and Hong Kong's Yip Tsz Fung. The 90-minute encounter saw both Afeeq and Yip involved in an intense battle. In the end, Afeeq walked out as the winner after a 9-3, 9-3, 3-9, 5-9, 10-8 score. The four-day championships was organised by the Squash Rackets Association of Selangor (SRAS) and Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) while the sponsors were Milo and Prince. SRAS president Datuk Mohamed Aini Taib said the championships had grown into a major junior event in the world. “This year we had about 50 participants from all over the world. The juniors love coming to Malaysia. We are also pleased as they are accompanied by parents,'' said Mohamed Aini.
