Kelantan to build RM500mil sports complex next year KOTA BARU: Kelantan, who have been languishing in the sports backwaters all these years, will have a RM500mil sports complex next year.
State Umno liaision chief Datuk Seri Annuar Musa said the complex would have a stadium, an indoor stadium and a swimming complex.
“It will be a symbol for sports development in Kelantan. Others cannot look down on us anymore,” he said, when launching the state-level community league sports here on Friday night.
Annuar said Kelantan could host the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in 2012 upon completion of the sports complex. Terengganu will host the biennial Games next year and Malacca in 2010.
Annuar, who is also Kelantan Football Association president, said the state’s dismal showing in sports at the national-level was due to the absence of systematic planning at the grassroots and the lack of infrastructures for youths to be actively involved in sports.
“In fact, the state stadium we have now is the country’s oldest state stadium,” he said.
Annuar also announced that the state football squad would be sponsored by several companies, including budget carrier AirAsia. – Bernama
