Hansen draws the line on Delia’s exploits KUALA LUMPUR: Dane Line Hansen dashed the hopes of Delia Arnold to win a third Wispa title at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
National No. 4 Delia had chalked up two upsets to get into the final of the NSC Super Satellite No. 2 tournament. But her efforts yesterday were not good enough against the top seeded Hansen, who won 9-7, 9-4, 9-7 in 46th minutes.
The victory for Hansen was worth US$1,520 (RM5,000) while Delia, who won the NSC Satellite and POF Pakistan Satellite tournaments, received US$1,064 (RM3,500).
It was Delia’s second loss to Hansen in an NSC satellite tournament final. She fell to a 2-3 defeat last year.
However, Delia has certainly showed improvement in her game. She eliminated second seed Joshna Chinappa of India in the quarter-finals and fourth seed Alana Miller of Canada in the semi-finals.
In the final, the fourth seeded Delia started off well, taking a 7-4 lead but allowed Hansen to storm back to take the set. It was the same in the third game with Delia letting slip a 6-4 lead.
“I was a bit slow on the court today and could not match Hansen's speed. But I am overall happy with my performance in the tournament and I believe that the two upset wins here will help me improve on my world rankings,” said Delia.
The next assignment for Delia, who is ranked 46th in the world, is the Malaysian Open from July 23-26. She is a wildcard entry in the main draw.
In the men's final, top seed Shahid Zaman of Pakistan came back from a set down to beat second seed Mike Corren of Australia 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-7 in 27 minutes.
RESULTS
Men: Shahid Zaman (Pak) bt Mike Corren (Aus) 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-7.
Women: Line Hansen (Den) bt Delia Arnold (Mas) 9-7, 9-4, 9-7.
