KUALA LUMPUR: Four Malaysian players scored upset wins to storm into the quarter-finals of the NSC I Satellite No. 2 tournament at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
Ivan Yuen, Choong Kam Hing and Mohd Asyraf Azan were on fire in the men’s first round while Low Wee Wern was just as inspiring in the women’s section.
Top national junior player Ivan, ranked 176 in the world, scored the biggest win of his career when he stunned world No. 59 and top seed Ryan Cuskelly of Australia 11-8, 11-13, 11-7, 11-4 in 60 minutes.
Ivan, the Asian junior individual runner-up, will face team-mate Choong Kam Hing in today’s quarter-finals.
World No. 196 Kam Hing had earlier defeated world No. 122 and eighth seed Siddarth Suchde of India 11-6, 11-13, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 in 58 minutes.
Ivan, who will turn 18 next month, was thrilled with his win over Cuskelly.
Mohd Asyraf took 61 minutes to come back from a set down to send third seed Mike Corren of Australia packing 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 8-11, 11-6.
Asyraf will next meet compatriot Nafzahizam Adnan.
In the women’s section, Asian junior champion Wee Wern also had to fight back from a set down to beat eighth seed Emma Beddoes of England 14-16, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8 in 60 minutes.
The 18-year-old Wee Wern will face third seed Donna Urquhart of Australia for a place in the semi-finals.
