fifth straight boys’ team title: Leong
PETALING JAYA: Selangor, powered by individual champion Leong Elroy, thrashed Kelantan 3-0 in the National Schools Sports Council (MSSM) squash team final at the Astaka Courts here yesterday. Len Wai Kit set the ball rolling by defeating Mohd Fikri 9-3, 9-0, 9-2. Leong then delivered the winning point by beating Ong Han Jie 9-5, 9-5, 9-3. Selangor were awarded the third point when Kelantan’s Mohd Jabrullah conceded a walkover to Samuel Chan. Selangor coach Samsuri Rasib was delighted to see his team retain both the boys’ individual and team titles for the fifth consecutive time. He, however, was not too happy about the tight schedule for the individual and team events, with the boys having to play five matches in two days. “This is the first time they have been made to play so many matches in two days. We had to follow the programme provided by the Ministry of Education,” said Samsuri. Meanwhile, Penang disposed of Kedah 3-0 to lift the girls’ team crown. Lim Wee Nee eliminated Lee Xin Ying 9-0, 9-2, 9-0 to give Penang the lead. Low Wee Nee, who won the individual title, sealed the winning point with an easy 9-0, 9-2, 9-2 win over Norlia Zamri. Nessrine Ariffin outplayed Yew An Gee 9-4, 9-2, 9-1 to complete the rout.
