Diligent training: Darren Diligent training helps Darren reach the top
YOUNGSTER Darren Subramaniam’s perseverance has paid off and he is now the top squash player in the Under-15 age group.
Darren’s rise to the top is not surprising as the 1.64m-tall lad had to undergo a diligent training programme to move up the ladder.
Perseverance pays off: Darren is currently at the top of the Under-15 age group.
“For me, this is just the beginning and I have a long way to go to realise my dreams of becoming a national player. I owe my progress to my father,” Darren said after a training session at the PJ Astaka courts recently.
His relationship with squash started when he was 10 and he used to join his father for regular squash sessions. Subramaniam was quick to notice his son’s potential and enrolled Darren in the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) junior squash programme.
It was not a rosy ride for Darren and he tasted failure in his first competition.
“I can still remember it. It was the Under-11 competition in the SportExcel circuit. I was knocked out in the first round and I realised that I had to train more diligently,” Darren said.
He won his first title in 2006 at the Selangor Schools Sports Council (MSSS) squash championships. He defeated teammate T. Devamuthan to win the Under-12 title. He has not looked back since then.
Last year was an impressive one for Darren. He dominated the Under-13 age group in the local squash scene.
The Squash Rackets Associa-tion of Selangor (SRAS) supported his participation in two legs of the Australian Tri Series. Darren justified his selection by winning the Under-13 titles at both the legs. He also won the Under-13 title in the competitive Milo All Stars International Junior championships.
The Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) finally acknowledged Darren’s exploits in the squash courts by sending him to the Hong Kong Junior Open and he returned with the Under-13 title.
Now, Darren is training under Pakistani coach Sajjad Ahmad six times week at the PJ Astaka courts.
He also goes for swimming to improve his fitness and endurance. His next competition will be the Milo All Stars International Junior championships next month.
“I will be playing in the Under-15 category. The competition will be tough but I am determined to make an impact,” Darren said.
